Having been married for thirty-plus years, we have spent a lot of money and time perusing magazines offering many different types of home styles: everything from one-room cabins to elaborate homes built to entertain and enjoy the beautiful rivers, tranquil creeks, and the Chesapeake area of our Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula region.

A unique upbringing for both of us is that our fathers were both in the building profession and to say the least, it rubbed off on each of us. Larry's dad was a contractor and built beautiful homes in the Northern Neck. Lois' dad was a carpenter and loved working on anything from constructing new industrial buildings to restoring old homes and churches. In fact, he helped to renovate the church Lois joined as a child (and still belongs to today), Harmony Grove Baptist Church in Middlesex County.

Even though we both enjoyed the satisfaction found in our fathers' lifestyles, we pursued other careers. Larry's last profession found him in the insurance industry for twenty five years, and Lois is still a full-time employee at Bank of Lancaster as a Residential Loan Originator and has over 34 years in the Banking Profession.

Larry built his own home in 1976, and since our marriage, we have renovated many homes and built several barns and garages. Most recently Lois' grandfather's home, built in the late 1800s, was in dire need of serious and major repair. We didn't want to tear this home as it meant so much to us, so Larry rebuilt the home into a charming getaway cottage. It is so adorable and peaceful and has been praised by our friends, neighbors, and family.

In 2006, our nephew and his wife, Rodger and Darlene Dawson, started their own Log Home Business as Authorized Dealers for Honest Abe Log Homes in North Carolina while searching for their own log home dealer! We were both very impressed with the extensive and thorough research conducted by Rodger and Darlene before selecting Honest Abe as the most qualified, reliable, and customer-oriented Log Home Dealer. Little did they know when they started their own private journey to find their dream log home that their quest would actually turn into a new and exciting career venue for them! As they continued their research, they realized helping others find the "right" log home dealer was something in which they were now very well versed and certainly qualified to do. They then began talking with Honest Abe about the prospect of becoming an Authorized Dealer. Darlene and Rodger's desire and passion to help others "experience the experience" of log home living thus became "Bear's Den Log Homes" of North Carolina.

When Rodger and Darlene would visit us in "Northern Neck" in Virginia, we would receive step-by-step updates of their visits and tours to all the different log homes and dealers. We caught the "bug"! We started buying Log Home Magazines and very quickly we became enchanted by the warmth and relaxed atmosphere surrounding log home living. We realized it fit right into the tranquil and laid-back living found in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula of Virginia. Our interest was always encouraged by the enthusiasm of Rodger and Darlene. After a trip to Moss, Tennessee, a Honest Abe Log Raising, and a tour of the plant, we decided we wanted to bring the same qualified, reliable, and customer-oriented log home dealer to our area in Virginia. Since we knew the depths of Darlene's and Rodger's investigative works of log home dealers, we knew and felt their knowledge and talents would allow us to have a lot of the "legwork" of starting a new business well behind us.
